Brief History of Phoenix Chapter 215
The Order of Eastern Star, as an organization, first came to Beloit in 1896 with the chartering of Evening Star Chapter No. 77. It is significant to note that the name of the chapter was the same name of the Masonic Lodge of Colebrook, New Hampshire, the home Lodge of several of the original founders of Morning Star Lodge No. 10.
Evening Star Chapter No. 77 flourished in Beloit for many years. The organization was so strong that a second chapter (Phoenix Chapter 215) was started in 1916. As in all organizations, the membership of both chapters grew less and less. In 1993, Evening Star Chapter No. 77 merged with Phoenix Chapter No. 215 and this Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star continues to meet in the Beloit Masonic Center to this day.
Since its inception, Phoenix Chapter 215 has contributed greatly to the social and fraternal atmosphere of Masonry in Beloit. In addition to sponsoring a number of charitable activities and programs, the Eastern Star members in Beloit have contributed generously to furnishing and maintaining the facilities of the Beloit Masonic Temple. Many afternoon social groups have been sponsored by the Eastern Star, and in 1945, the Order of Eastern Star sponsored and instituted the Order of Rainbow for Girls.
